Cappy takes the form of his hat and grants Mario the power to temporarily capture other creatures, thus being able to use their abilities. After initial failure, Mario winds up in the neighbouring Cap Kingdom, where we see the first major new addition when Mario encounters Cappy. When she rejects his advances, he kidnaps her, and Mario sets off in pursuit to rescue his damsel in distress. Bowser is back, this time intent on marrying Princess Peach. Story-wise, Odyssey doesn’t provide much new. In Odyssey, we have proof that Mario is still the king of gaming, with his latest quest a strong contender for the Game of the Decade. This time, when you start chasing him, he’ll have a few flaming spiked shells to toss your way. In the next phase, as was in Cloud Kingdom, he’ll spawn more hats to throw, and you can throw Cappy at the fakes for hearts, or just dodge them and focus on hitting his hat. Watch how he angles his head to see the breath coming, and side somersault from side to side to avoid the blasts until he’s done spinning. This time, when he gets back on his feet, he’ll hop to the middle of the arena and create a powerful fire breath that he’ll sweep from side to side. He’s also learned a bit from the last fight, and will always block your first punching attempts, so be ready to jump his tail spin when he blocks your hit, then follow up to knock him backwards. With his hat, you can now try and punch him out, but he’ll bounce around creating flame shockwaves first, and then throw giant brick spheres to keep you back - which you can dodge. This fight will retread a bit of your previous encounter, following similar motions. Instead, jump over the spin and wait until he falls down surprised to land the final blow.
He’ll then follow up with a mighty tail spin, and if you aren’t careful you’ll be knocked back. As you start to try landing punches, you’ll find he’s ready this time, and continually blocks everything until a shield erupts. Dodge or knock away the clones until you spot the real hat coming your way and strike it when you have a clear shot.īowser will resume his tactic of making several ground pound shockwaves and throwing giant block spheres - but don’t get overconfident. In the final phase, Bowser will summon 5 hats at once, and launch them at random intervals and directions, which means you’ll need to quickly adapt to how he throws. Luckily, your new hat can break these apart, so keep plowing forward while breaking anything he throws at you until you can give him the 1-2 punch again. These can be dispelled with a toss, or you can dodge them and focus on the real hat to gain control of it again.Īs Bowser starts to hop around and ground pound again, he’ll pause to start throwing huge block spheres at you. When the next phase begins, Bowser will start tossing shadow versions of his hat to try and come at you from different angles. He’ll start trying to jump away and create shockwaves, so be sure to dodge them with timed jumps until you reach him, and start wailing on him until he gets knocked backwards. Wait until it comes right at you to send Cappy to fight back, and it will be knocked backwards and upside down.Īs Bowser stares in shock, take the opportunity to don his giant hat yourself, and then charge at him while throwing punches. As the fight commences, Bowser will start hopping between raised platform while throwing his hat at you, flailing wildly with its boxing gloves.
